| The UP10 was a lightweight, cheap, and maneuverable popular passenger car with a front-engine rear-wheel drive set up and excellent levels of basic performance aspects for its class. Its acceleration, ride comfort, endurance, and spaciousness were particularly praised. The UP10 had a long development period, taking 6 years from the initial plans to the start of production. However, it still played a role in opening Japan's era of motorization, selling an impressive 200,000 units in its first 3 years of release. Its marketing campaign involved asking the public to come up with the name of the new car, and "Publica" was selected after over 1 million votes had been received. Its price, based on a Tokyo delivery, was 389,000 yen. Performance: the Publica had a water-cooled horizontally opposed 2-cylinder 700 cc engine mated to a 4-speed transmission. It featured a large number of light alloy die-cast and plastic parts, which lowered the vehicle’s weight and enabled a high top speed and acceleration for its class. In addition, the front-engine rear-wheel drive structure improved the weight distribution over the front and rear wheels and gave it excellent hill climbing abilities. Ride comfort: the Publica employed Japan's first 6.00-12 tires. The front and rear suspension used stabilizer-equipped torsion bars and semi-elliptical springs, respectively, and both were provided with shock absorbers. |
