| The Contessa was a rear-engined passenger car independently designed by Hino based on its experience of domestic production of Renault vehicles. The rear suspension featured original trailing arms to improve endurance and steering stability. It was a sporty vehicle, placing first in the touring car class (700 cc to 1000 cc) and second in the sports car class (1300 cc or less) at the first Japanese Grand Prix in 1963. Production of the Contessa as a next-generation passenger vehicle was initially studied in 1956 while Renault production was still in top gear. Basically, the Contessa still relied heavily on Renault, especially for its production equipment, and design and manufacturing technology. The result was a car with modern styling in a class slightly above the Renault 4CV, which could be used for both family and commercial applications. Approximately 47,000 were produced from 1961 to 1964. |
