The first generation Silvia was released in 1965 as a semi-customized specialty car comprising a 2-seater coupe body on a Fairlady chassis.
The flowing and elegant styling by the German designer Albrecht Goertz was acclaimed as a handmade gem. The handmade aspects of the car are best expressed in its seamless body that was finished by a veteran employee, and its machined aluminum radiator grille.
Equipped with a 90 hp 1.6-liter dual-carburetor engine, the first usage in Japan of a Porsche-inspired cross-ratio 4-speed transmission, and a new type of diaphragm spring clutch, the high performance of the Silvia outstripped that of European sports cars in the same class. Careful consideration was also given to safety at high speeds, by providing safety belts as standard and securing wide fields of view.
This Silvia was only produced for 3 years, between 1965 and 1968, and it came with a high price tag (roughly 1.2 million yen compared to the 930,000 yen that the Fairlady 1600 cost). |
