| This was Japan's first turbocharged engine with an intercooler. It dramatically improved the minimum fuel efficiency of small truck diesel engines from 160 g/ps h to 148 g/ps h. Its main structural features are as follows. A cooling cavity was provided around the combustion chamber near the piston top face to inject jets of lubricant from the cylinder block for forced-air cooling. The use of steel laminated cylinder head gaskets prevented bore deformation when the head bolts were tightened. Its five fuel injection nozzle holes allowed improved fuel atomization and distribution at low engine speeds, and a large fuel injection amounts in heavy load regions. Fuel was precisely controlled electronically. An impellor and the like were devised for the turbocharger to effectively deliver intake air by pressure in wide speed ranges. |
