In 1947, Toyota Motor Co. developed its first small engine, the Type S (SV, 950 cc, 27 hp) and installed it in its compact passenger cars and trucks. After the Type R engine (OHV, 1453 cc, 48 hp) was developed in 1953 to provide greater speed and power, the company studied ways to utilize the Type S engine, whose production volume had decreased.
1953 was a time when the post-war recovery had gone into a slump, and attention began to be focused on the rationalizing of distribution, mainly by using three-wheeled trucks with comparatively long cargo beds for small-lot transport. In 1954, Toyota developed the Toyopet SKB light truck, the forerunner of the Toyoace, as well as a forklift, both powered by the Type S engine.
The SKB was developed as a truck for Japanese customers, with a cab-over design that allowed for a long cargo bed, four wheels to provide running stability, and simple accessories that made it an economical purchase. It was renamed the Toyoace in 1956, and with its combination of practicality and economy, it immediately became the "ace" vehicle for small-lot distribution, supplanting the three-wheeled truck. |
