| The TC10, Japan's first truck with two front axles, was developed in the late 1950s for large-volume, long-distance transport, which was just getting started in Japan. It was also the first attempt at a tilt-cab design in Japan. For the next eight years, Hino was the only company making trucks with two front axles, and the design eventually evolved into the 4-axle, low-floor truck seen today. The reason for using two front axles was to provide a 10-ton load capacity while utilizing the existing front axle to minimize the number of new parts. The first and second front axles had independent suspensions, but there was some concern that an equalizer unit might be required to distribute the load equally between the two axles. There were still many rough roads in those days, and the engineers worried that problems might arise as a result. If the first axle went over a bump, would the second axle be strong enough to withstand the load imposed on it? If the second axle went over a bump, would the drive axle lift off the ground, causing the driving force to be lost? However, vehicle test results indicated that the problems were not as bad as had been feared, and the final product was developed with only minor modifications. |
