| In the late 1950s, many companies, including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, were producing large trucks in the 6-ton class and above, while Hino, Toyota, and others were making compact four-wheeled trucks with capacities of 2 tons and lighter. But none of the makers was producing medium-sized trucks in the 2.5 to 4-ton class. The Jupiter T10 was the first vehicle to fill this gap in the medium truck field. Trucks in this series could carry a high-speed diesel engine that was basically a diesel version of the Jeep gasoline engine, and the series was the first to offer a wide selection of models, including different combinations of wheelbases. In 1958, prototypes were built of the 2.5-ton T10 and the 3-ton T11, and production and sales of both models began the following year. The successor model, the T22, was a full-fledged medium truck with a stronger chassis and a more powerful engine. |
