Due to recent changes in the economic and logistics environments, customer needs have shifted and further cost (initial & running) reductions are required. An investigation of vehicle operation costs in the market showed that potential savings in maintenance costs exceeded those of fuel, and reducing these costs became an important issue to address. In addition, with the increase in elderly and female drivers, it was important to boost safety by reducing the driving burden. Bearing in mind this changing market environment and actual driving states, the next generation cost saving transmission (the "Smoother-F") was introduced. Based on a development concept of reducing life cycle costs and improving safety, the Smoother-F reduces costs with a maintenance-free clutch and by eliminating the clutch pedal entirely. The two-pedal system makes the truck easy to drive, and reduces driving fatigue and related accidents. |

| Vehicle introduction | : | Together with providing the next generation new "Smoother-F" transmission, which combined economic efficiency with easy operation, some vehicles were equipped with an optional oxidation catalyst to boost marketability. "Smoother-F" combines the advantages of MT and AT, to alleviate driving fatigue, and improve safety and comfort by eliminating the need for a clutch (only 2 pedals, an accelerator and a brake are required). As the transmission is based on an MT, the extremely low power transmission loss between the engine and drive system enables the same fuel efficiency as an MT vehicle. Since it also eliminates the need to replace the clutch, the subsequent reduction in maintenance costs contributes to lower vehicle life cycle costs. | |
