This was an automatic speed control device that allowed driving at constant speeds from 50 to 120 km/h on expressways or in uncrowded suburbs without having to use the acceleration pedal, regardless of road conditions. This could be achieved simply by setting the control switch when the vehicle reached a certain speed. When the brake pedal was pressed, the device operation was cancelled. Running at a constant speed was made possible by a device that controlled the accelerator in combination with a centrifugal governor weight and reversible rotation DC motor. It meant that no changes needed to be made to the transmission. To change the constant speed while driving with the device activated, the auto drive switch dial could be turned for acceleration and deceleration. This device was employed as an optional equipment for the Crown Eight, which was its first application in Japan. |
