1. This was the world's first collision warning system using laser radars. 2. It calculated the distance and relative speed between two vehicles quickly based on vehicle speed and the time taken by laser light to return to the reception device installed at the front of the vehicle after striking the rear reflectors of the vehicle ahead. 3. If the distance between the cars was below a certain limit in relation to the vehicle speed, an alarm was given. If the distance then fell below a separately set limit, a danger signal was given. The limit value could be selected to one of three distances (far, middle and near) according to the driver's preference. 4. The system was designed only to react to the first guardrail reflector on the road shoulder and not those beyond it. 5. In addition, the system also contained functions that issued alarms useful to the driver. It was set not to issue needless alarms if vehicle speed and following distance were constant or the vehicle was driving at low speeds in crowded city streets 6. Originally, the laser radar system was relatively large as shown in the picture (right). Four years later, its size was reduced and its performance and practicality were greatly improved. Additionally, the indication portion was continuously improved by building it into the instrument panel as a 2DIN size audio device, etc. The system played a pioneering role in the development of current collision warning systems. |
