・ This engine contained elliptic pistons with a shape called a normal elliptic envelope. Electroless nickel plating was applied from the piston head to the top ring groove to accommodate the load on the piston ring generated by the pressure of combustion. The piston skirt was coated with fluorine resin to reduce friction loss.
・The cylinders were of an aluminum sleeveless liner type, and the liner was plated with NS (nickel silicon carbide).
・Two light weight and highly rigid connecting rods were provided for each cylinder made from titanium-alloy.
・Each cylinder had 4 intake and 4 exhaust valves with a valve angle of 29 degrees. High chrome heat resistant steel was used for the intake side, and an Inconel material for the exhaust side. In spite of the DOHC32 valve mechanism, the mass and size of the cylinder head were reduced.
・The use of two plugs for one cylinder shortened the flame propagation distance and enabled high combustion efficiency. |
